In good condition. A beautiful set that presents attractively. Characteristic late 17th century bindings of marbled leather and marbled edges. Lovely spines with gilt compartments and original spine labels. Intricate tooling at spine. Spines are desiccated and somewhat chipped at heads and tails. Boards are lightly scuffed with minor wear to extremities. Minor rounding of corners. A few joints are tender, particularly volume one. Gutters are tender as well with light cracking. Handsome bookplates of John Chipman Gray on pastedowns. Interiors are remarkably well preserved. Minor toning and foxing throughout. Quite bright considering these volumes are 330 years old. Bindings tight and intact. Occasional old hand marginalia in quill on a few leaves. Free of modern markings. A very sound and unspoiled set. Please see photos. Important classics work of Johann Georg Graevius (1632-1703). Graevius was a German scholar and critic. Graevius “enjoyed a very high reputation as a teacher, and his lecture-room was crowded with pupils, many of them of distinguished rank, from all parts of the world. He was visited by Lorenzo Magalotti and honored with special recognition by Louis XIV, and was a particular favorite of William III of England, who made him historiographer royal.” This work of Cicero is considered one of his best works. Provenance of John Chipman Gray (1839-1915) who was an American scholar of property law and professors at Harvard Law School. He founded the law firm Ropes & Gray, with law partner John Codman Ropes. He was half-brother to U.S. Supreme Court associate justice Horace Gray, and a grandson of merchant and politician William Gray.
