Important classics work of Johann Georg Graevius (1632-1703). Graevius was a German scholar and critic. Graevius “enjoyed a very high reputation as a teacher, and his lecture-room was crowded with pupils, many of them of distinguished rank, from all parts of the world. He was visited by Lorenzo Magalotti and honored with special recognition by Louis XIV, and was a particular favorite of William III of England, who made him historiographer royal.” This work of Cicero is considered one of his best works. Provenance of John Chipman Gray (1839-1915) who was an American scholar of property law and professors at Harvard Law School. He founded the law firm Ropes & Gray, with law partner John Codman Ropes. He was half-brother to U.S. Supreme Court associate justice Horace Gray, and a grandson of merchant and politician William Gray. He was an abolitionist and “argued that the defeat of slavery was imperative for the survival of a nation.” RAREE1693JRSX
