1835 Antique Map; Colchester, Essex by J & C Walker

Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique map "Colchester"." Offered matted ready to frame. A view produced to support the Boundary Reform Act of 1832 proposed boundaries and the parliamentary boundaries. A detailed map on a scale of 1 inch to a mile. DATE PRINTED: 1835. The map first was published in 1835 and then appeared in editions to 1840.SIZE: The printed area including titles is approx. 11.5 x 17.5 cm, 4.5 x 7 inches (small) plus margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by R. Creighton and engraved by J & C Walker based on the Ordnance Survey. John and Charles were the sons of John Walker Snr who worked for Alexander Dalrymple, Hydrographer to the East India Company in 1779 and for the Admiralty in 1795. John took over as hydrographer in 1808 and when he died Sir Francis Beaufort (wind force scale) was appointed. John the younger also became hydrographer to the East India Company in 1836. He and Charles continued the family firm until 1890. PROVENANCE: A plate published in "A Topographical Dictionary of England..." by Samuel Lewis (1835-1838) and in parallel in "View of the Representative History of England" also by Samuel Lewis (1835 & 1840). The Reform Bill redistributed parliamentary seats, enlarging or disenfranchising rotten boroughs, and recognising the emerging industrial towns. TYPE: Antique steel plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good. Suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase.
