Description: Hard to find 47-page issue of the weekly Littell's Living Age published in Boston for 28 February 1852. This one neatly rescued from an old and damaged bound volume of the popular magazine. Some highlights include: An extended opening essay (28 pages) by the English journalist David T. Coulton following the publication of two new works attempting to solve the mystery of the author of the "Junius" letters, a long stream of letters critical of the late King George III and his administration penned in the late 18th Century. The mystery surrounding this series of letters has not, unto this day, been solved to everyone's satisfaction. It may be, in fact, too late at this date for anyone to care, although in 1852 it was still a matter of enthusiastic spade work and speculation. The works here discussed, including extended excerpts and quotation from the letters, are John Britton's The Authorship of the Junius Letters (1848) and John Wade's Junius, including Letters by the Same Writer, Under Other Signatures. With New Evidence as to the Authorship (1850).* ALSO, More than a full page is devoted to an obituary, originally published in the Times (London) following the passing of the celebrated English painter, J.M.W. Turner. This is an item of some interest. Also, an article of further interest (four full pages) in review of Robert Mac Micking's Recollections of Manila and the Philippines, During 1848, 1849, and 1850. The article includes a great deal of quotation from the volume. Unsigned, The article originally appeared in the London Examiner. Micking's volume is today almost impossible to find in a first book edition, when it was published in London by Bentley. Numerous other articles, news notes, reviews, poems, etc. * Evidence of Coulton's authorship of the "Junius" article above is found in the Wellesley Index, Vol. I.
