Description: I have here for sale a rare book entitled ETRUSCAN BOLOGNA A Study by Richard F Burton. It is a first edition published by Smith, Elder & Co, London in 1876. It has a fold-out plate at the front entitled Synoptical Table of the Paleo-Ethnological Remains of Central Italy. It has additional in-text illustrations throughout. Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821 – 1890) was the British explorer, writer, orientalist scholar, and soldier. He was famed for his travels and explorations in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, as well as his extraordinary knowledge of languages and cultures. In this book, Burton analyzes Bologna's archaeological remains, the Etruscan language, and the Etrurian Confederation. Burton accepted a consulship in Trieste in 1872. He used his findings, along with the research of fellow Bolognese professors, to write 'Etruscan Bologna' which became one of the best resources on archaeological history of Bologna. Burton, whose literature was often over-sexualized and witty, provided a thorough and focused analysis of ancient Etruscans seeking to uncover the mysteries of the Roman-influenced culture.Mid blue hardboards with geometric pattern in black to top and bottom edge of the boards. Small gilt image or Etruscan Temple to the centre. Gilt title lettering to the spine. Slightly faded spine and bumped to head and tail. Original plain Dark Brown endpapers. Light stain to the bottom half of the page edges. Very light foxing to the first and last few pages. Others clean and the binding is tight.
