Description: Westmoreland Rare Coins 100% Perfect Positive Feedback ** 1883 U.S. Silver Kingdom of Hawaii Dime ~ Nice Original ~ Very Fine ++ ** Long before Hawaii became the 50th U.S. state, the U.S. Mint produced a variety of coins for the kingdom, including the 1883 Kingdom of Hawaii Dime. This interesting coin features the portrait of King Kalākaua I. The reverse side of this coin features a laurel wreath encircling English words “ONE DIME,” as well as the Hawaiian translation “UMI KENETA.” The reverse also includes the Hawaiian motto, “UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO,” which means the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness. The production of Hawaiian coins during this era was evidence of the Hawaiian Kingdom’s attempts to exert their independence.
