Description: 1892-CC $5 Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle, Variety 1-APCGS graded AU50, NFC Secure Mintage 82,968PCGS/NGC graded population 1,864, including resubmissions. Douglas Winter in his book "Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint" suggests the rarity is 15th of 19. He indicates that there are three Die States; I) Mintmark normal, scroll under the word WE in the motto is intact, II) Mintmark is normal and the scroll is broken, and III) Mintmark is doubled and scroll under WE is totally missing. The coin here appears to be a Die State II with the broken Scroll. That said, there is also faint doubling of the mintmark, TE in UNITED, and TA in STATES, which are not mentioned in Winter's book. Under "EYE APPEAL" he states, "It is not easy to find an 1892-CC half eagle with above average eye appeal. In my experience, the few coins that are well struck seem to have many bagmarks while those with nice color have detracting copper spots. If the collector sees a really appealing example, he should purchase it as a better piece may prove hard to procure." Garrett and Guth comment in their "Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins", "A quick glance at the population data for the 1892-CC half eagle illustrates clearly that this issue is much rarer that the 1891-CC. Most of the 1892-CC half eagles seen are Extremely Fine or About Uncirculated, and most are heavily bagmarked..." Will ship via USPS Priority Mail Express, signature required.
