Jones played in his first U.S. Amateur Open golf tournament at age 14 in 1916. The 1920 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship was held at Engineers C.C. in Roslyn Harbor, New York from September 6–11, 1920. Charles Evans Jr. won the tournament, defeating Francis Ouimet 7 and 6. Robert T. Jones Jr. and Fred J. Wright Jr. were also medalists. Robert Tyre Jones Jr. (March 17, 1902 – December 18, 1971) was an American amateur golfer who was one of the most influential figures in the history of the sport; he was also a lawyer by profession. Jones founded and helped design the Augusta National Golf Club, and co-founded the Masters Tournament.
