Description: Large-format fold-out 1964 road map of Montgomery, printed more than 58 years ago. The map opens to a generous 23" x 31" and has great detail on old street and highway alignments, with cartography by the Dolph Map Company of Fort Lauderdale. It was distributed by the Montgomery News Company, 874 Martha Street, during a period of civil unrest and protests on segregation. Prominently featured are the proposed routes of two interstate highways that would slice through the city: I-65 and I-85. The construction of these highways disrupted many downtown neighborhoods, contributing to additional unrest and protests during the mid-1960s. Fifty-eight years after this map was printed, the Montgomery City Council revised the wording on its Official Seal to include the phrase "Birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement." On the reverse side of the Montgomery map there's a street index and maps of Wetumpka, Prattville, and Selma, where in 1965 a civil rights demonstration ended in violence when marchers were attacked and beaten in what has become known as "Bloody Sunday." Condition: The map is in very good, lightly used condition, bright and clean, with no rips or tears. It folds to 9" x 4". Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. The map is undated and was published circa 1963-64, based on the status of completed roads. The addresses for both Dolph Maps and Montgomery News include ZIP Codes, which had been introduced July 1, 1963. Buy with confidence!
