Witold-K. (Wit Leszek Kaczanowski) was born in 1932 in Warsaw. After studies at the Academy of Fine Arts he designed posters, created artworks for the "Świat" magazine, illustrated stories of Stanisław Dygat, and painted wall decorations, including the ceiling light at the theatre of the Community Centre in Oświęcim, . He had his first individual exhibition in 1960 at the Actors' Club SPATiF in Warsaw of paintings inflienced by the work of Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, and Tadeusz Makowski.In 1964 the artist was sent on a scholarship to Paris by the Polish Ministry of Culture, and smuggled manuscripts of dissident writers from Poland and the Soviet Union into the West. For this he was given an award by the American Congress for the Freedom of Culture but forbidden to return to Poland for many years. In 1966 he had his first exhibition abroad in Galerie 3+2 in Paris, showing works described by Jacques Prevert as the backs of people. Two years later he moved to New York, where he exhibited his works in a show at La Boetie Gallery along with those of Calder, Chagall, Giacometti, Matisse, Miró and Pablo Picasso. In America he started to make sculptures, and even murals. In 1969 he Moved to California, opening a gallery/studio in Beverly Hills.He later lived in Sante Fe and Houston, showing his works in many solo as well as group exhibitions. But the biggest exhibition of his works so far was his exhibition at the auction house Sotheby's in Amsterdam in 2007.
