A spectacular and hardy spring bloomer, with very showy lavender pea-like flowers with pink overtones held tightly on bare branches in early spring . The heart-shaped leaves emerge copper color , maturing to a deep green are highly ornamental and turn yellow in fall. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 1 foot from the ground . It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 60 years or more. This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. Height: 8 feet Spread: 10 feet Sunlight: full sun partial shade Hardiness Zone: 4b Medicinal use of Redbud: A tea made from the inner bark is highly astringent. Used in the treatment of fevers, diarrhea and dysentery, it is also a folk remedy for leukemia. A cold infusion of the roots and inner bark have been used to treat various chest complaints including whooping cough and congestion . Edible parts of Redbud: Flowers - raw or pickled. A nice refreshing acid taste, the flowers are rich in vitamin C and make a pleasant addition to salads. They can also be used as a condiment. The unopened buds are pickled or used as a caper substitute. Other uses : The bark of young shoots is used in basket making.
