Description: This Modern Library book, #125.1 is New Grub Street by George Gissing and includes an introduction by Harry Hansen. From the front flap of a spring 1942 ML copy: "For those who cherish the dream of writing and for those who read and ponder the whole mystery of the anguish and ecstasy of authorship, New Grub Street is a book of revelation. Not only does it expose the shifts and subterfuges of meager talents to provide marketable stuff and the devotion and sacrifice of those who consecrate themselves to the severest of arts, but it lays bare Gissing's own fierce struggle against vulgarity and the world's indifference. In that sense, it is a true book of the heart." 552 pages Collectors' Notes: The book has a Toledano 4 leatherette cover and C or Bernhard endpapers. The copyright page states “First Modern Library Edition, 1926”. Note this was only available in the hardcover Toledano binding 8 from 1940 to 1942. The used book has bright gilt, a fading top stain, and edgewear, especially at spine ends and corners. Fanning the pages, I noted no underlining or marginalia, no offensive odor and the binding has no separation. See photos As of this offering, there is one copy on eBay coded as 1st editions, offered at $22.40 (search: "Modern Library" "Gissing" "New Grub Street").
