Coxton to Giberson (C TH & SE RY) 50 Railroad history is studded with many fascinating stories and legends. The Bedford and Bloomfield Branch of the Monon seems to have had more than its share of these anecdotes. A lady living near Dresden on the B & B Branch around 1890 owned a cow that she prized highly. One day this cow wandered upon the B & B's right-of-way about the time that a train was coming along-or at least, that's her story. Subsequently, she sued the railroad for damages incident to the death and mangling of the animal. She failed to recover any sum, and, deeply resenting the fact, gave vent to her feelings by frequently soaping the rails passing through her property. Now, between Dresden and the tunnel two and one-half miles to the south, lay one of the B & B's steepest grades, a rise reaching two per cent at times. Railroad crews always had trouble getting their Bedford-bound trains to the top of this hill, even when track conditions were ideal. A soapy track was completely impractical. The "poor neighbor" policy of the deceased cow's owner caused the crews to spend many an hour cleaning the rails before their trains could proceed. The contest continued for many months. At last, the Monon management, tired of paying overtime to B & B crews, made a settlement. The determined lady secured the same amount that she had previously sued for. The soaping stopped and things were back to normal on the B&B. Sometimes, the passengers riding the B & B had their qualms. A respected lady of Greene County was having her first train ride to Bedford one day on No. 68. Shortly after leaving Robinson's Station she glanced out of the car window and saw what looked like an insurmountable ridge looming in front of the train. Hurriedly calling the conductor she expressed her fears as to what the train would do when it hit the gigantic obstruction. All pictures are of the actual item.
