Description: This is an Ancient Roman vessel likely used for food preparation. It is terracotta in composition and appears to be wheel-thrown. It is from the Imperial Period (1st to 3rd Century CE), possibly from Roman Tunisia. Toward the end of this window in Roman history, the empire had grown to be too vast and was divided into an Eastern and Western Empire under Diocletian who ruled from 284 to 305. The last Roman emperor in the west was Romulus Augustus who was deposed in 476. The Eastern Empire (Byzantine Empire) would endure until 1453. The piece is roughly 5.75" long across the top. Please note that we do not import or export ancient items. Additionally, our items typically come from people and businesses that we know and trust. We tend to avoid buying from unknown sources or individuals because we cannot guarantee that they have obtained their inventory through legitimate means. Our listings are researched prior to posting and our descriptions are informed by our own knowledge and experience as well as by the vendors from which we obtain our inventory. Thus, our titles and descriptions are our opinions as to the nature and history of the object for sale. Even so, we welcome discussions and questions PRIOR to purchase.
