MAJOR GENERAL ANDREW JACKSON SMITH - CLIPPED SIGNATURE - HFSID 32939 ANDREW JACKSON SMITH Clipped signature on ruled paper by the American Civil War Union major general Clipped signature: "A. J. Smith/Maj. Gen.". Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. 3¼x1 ruled paper, mounted to a 3¾x1½ slip of white paper. Smith (1815-1897, born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania) was a Union general during the American Civil War, best known for routing Confederate General Bedford Forrest at the Battle of Tupelo (July 14-15, 1864), one of the worst defeats ever suffered by the brilliant cavalry officer. Smith served in the Mexican-American war and fought against Native Americans in the Washington and Oregon territored before the war, rising to the rank of major. He was made a cavalry colonel at the start of the war and quickly rose to the rank of brigadier general, participating in the Vickburg and Red River Campaigns and, after the Battle of Tupelo, commanded XVI Corps at the Battle of Nashville. He was breveted major general and retired in 1869 to become postmaster of St. Louis, Missouri. Lightly toned and rippled. Irregular edges. Otherwise in fine condition.
