First American edition, first printing, first issue/first state with all required points: “first American edition” stated on the copyright page; the original $1.75 price on the front flap of the dust jacket; and, correctly, no “Printed in the USA” statement on the rear jacket flap. (McBride’s Points of Issue notes that the absence of this statement is mandatory for a first issue/first state of this title.) The book is in very good condition but for some light and even toning, very slight wear to the gilt lettering on the spine, light shelfwear and edgewear to the spine ends and corners, and slight bumping to the spine ends. Please see photographs as to condition. The dust jacket—which is NOT price-clipped—likewise is in very good condition but for a few tears and chips (the largest of which is to the head of the spine and extending to the top left edge of the cover), some creasing, scuffs, rubs, shelfwear, edgewear, and light toning and soiling. The red-and-black lettering on the sharp midcentury style dust jacket—designed by Art Brenner—remains vivid, especially on the cover and even on the spine, where the red is so often sun-faded into colorlessness. The dust jacket is now protected in a removable archival mylar protector. This collectible book is not price-clipped, not ex-library, not remaindered, and not a book club edition. It will be shipped bubble-wrapped in a box.
