Description: Photo Album Early20th Century Miss Bennett’s College Millbrook, New York / 1908A 1908 collection of the now demolished Bennett College, also known as Bennett School for Girls and The Bennett School of Liberal and Applied Arts. Miss Bennet’s School was a women's college founded in 1890, in Millbrook, NY. by May Friend Bennett (1863-1924). “Bennett College was founded in 1890 at Irvington, New York by May F. Bennett as the Bennett School for Girls, a four-year high school with two extra years of study. In 1907 the college moved to its final home on 22 acres (89,000 m2) in Millbrook, Duchess County, New York, which was originally built as a hotel. The hotel failed to catch on. In 1907 the school had an enrollment of 120 students and a faculty of 29. It became a junior college in circa 1935. At the time of its closing, enrollment was around 300 students. The college closed in 1978 after entering bankruptcy.”(Wikipedia) The main building, Halcyon Hall, was built as a hotel (see above) in 1893 by H.J. Davison Jr., a publisher from New York. The 200-room Queen Anne structure had five stories, a basement and sub-basement, and as of 2020 was in very poor condition: rooms and floors have collapsed, decay was everywhere. Photos of the building in disrepair and prior to demolition may be found on the Facebook page Hidden Hudson Valley (New York)The collection includes:1. The black 10 x 13 inch photo album with 20 pages of silver gelatin tone black and white photographs measuring in various sizes 3 x 5”, 3 x 4”, 2 x 3” mounted on stiff black paper of women students enjoying various friend activities plus planned school activities and portraits of students. All of the photos are captioned. There are also programs and formal photos from school activities, plays and field days.Condition: Very good with some fading to a few photos -- one family estate condition commensurate with age being 1908, which was the second year of Miss Bennett’s acquisition on the property. The photos are a wonderful collection depicting Miss Bennet’s school life in 1907-08. Very little damage if any to the photos.
