Description: Up for auction is an antique Victorian 19th century original watercolor painting on salt print signed A.M. Blecke, of a man, recently found at auction in the Lancaster County PA area. It is offered in good used condition. Condition issues include losses down to the gesso of picture frame, cracks to lemon gold liner, foxing, spotting and discoloration to matting, varnish losses, unknown if varnish original to the piece, does not seem so maybe, yellowing of paper and paper matting.Expertly painted, interesting dry brush style (stubble on face). Experienced portrait artist. Single backing seems original with newer nails and eye hooks. Glass seems original, wavy. Overall size 12 7/8 x 14 7/8". Original wire at halfway holes indicate more mid 19th century when the top of pictures still hung away from the wall. Some touch ups to the frame. Dress seems mid 19th century as well. Seems done from life, a sitting. We just learned this from a knowledgeable ebayer:This is a tinted salt print, the earliest photographs on paper from the 1860?s, at the time they had no way to fix the surface and the salts were fugitive and the developed images almost disappeared. They hired painters to enhance the photos. One tell is how accurate anatomically the image is down to the person's gaze. If it was painted from life it would have distortions because each human would have seen it differently or would render it less accurately..Because it was difficult to keep children sit still mother child pictures are sometimes composite of two images.
