Description: Estate FindInaba CloisonnéKyoto JapanCigarette Box We offer an antique Japanese cloisonné cigarette box hand crafted by the Inaba firm in Kyoto, Japan. The exterior lid of the box is decorated with peonies afront a flowering tree growing from a rock outcrop aside a white stream. Metallic flakes added to the enameling create a subtle shimmer to the rock outcrop. The sides of the box are enriched with stylized five petal pink and white flowers set within a deep blued green scrolled ground. The interior of the box has two engraved panels each featuring a pair of birds flying among weeping willow branches. The panels are brass and the interior sides frames are silver in color. The cigarette box is marked within the lower right corner with the company logo centered over “S. INABA KYOTO”.The cigarette box measures 3 5/8” in width, 3” in depth and 2 3/4” in height. As seen in the photographs, the outer lid has detached from the inner lid and can be reattached with solder or silicone or left alone. This allows an opportunity to observe the construction details of the box. Though never to be seen, the underside of the lid was enameled. The Inaba Company of Kyoto was founded in 1886 by Inaba Isshin, a former samurai who began working in enamels in 1875, the company’s output was eclectic and combined designs and techniques used by both Kyoto and Nagoya makers. The third and fourth generation heads of the family still live in Kyoto and are invaluable sources of information about the history of cloisonné making in Japan.Following the closure of the company in the 1990s, their archives, together with tools and enamelling materials, are preserved in the Museum of Kyoto.
