Description: Title: AmericaeSeptentrionalis Pars. From the West Indische Paskaert . . . 1621. From The Original on Vellum in the Collection of F.B. O'Callaghan, LLD For D.T. Valentine's Manual for 1858 Very attractive antique reproduction dated 1858 of a 1621 manuscript Dutch sea chart of North America copied "from the original on vellum in the collection of E.B. O'Callaghan, L.L.D." by Anthony Iacobsz (already a rare map at that time) titled Americae Septentrionalis Pars in Latin (Part of North America), which was reprinted and published in the1858 edition of Valentine's Manual. Inland of today's U.S. coast, we see the coats of arms of the colonial powers of France, Holland, Virginia, and Spain(this last one appears to have been drawn backwards) that identify the four great regions of New France, New Holland, Virginia, and Florida, each outlines in a different color along the coast. The map includes two decorative cartouches. The one in the upper left is surmounted by an armillary sphere with figures of two navigators, one on each side, and, at their feet, a globe, an hour glass, open books and charts, below which appears the Amsterdam city emblem. The cartouche in the lower right contains the map title in Latin, and description text in Dutch. The hand-colored map depicts the Atlantic coast from Newfoundland along the US East Coast to Florida, then along the entire Gulf of Mexico to Yucatan, the Atlantic coast of Central America and northern Venezuela, including the islands of the West Indies, and Bermuda. The colorful map locates cities, ports, shipping routes and islands. The sea is crisscrossed by rhumb lines and decorated with a sailing ship. Colors separate various regions, though not always by colonial power. The ornamental map names a great number of places along the coasts, as well as the islands. This map was published in the 1858 edition of Valentine's Manual. Condition: Good- Folding map, very clear impression on sturdy, thin paper, well executed hand-coloring, a couple of light spots, well repaired 3 inch tear at stub (pictured), light creasing near repair. Note that the map is wrapped for protection, which makes the color a bit dull, but it is not. The apparent rippling around the edges of the map is from the plastic film. Very nice example of a scarce map, would display well once framed. Size: 17 x 20 inches Will ship USPS Media Mail for free.
