Description: Taraf de Haidouks presents its first all-new album for Nonesuch with "Band of Gypsies," an album of previously unrecorded pieces taped during three electrifying special concerts in Bucharest, Romania at the end of 2000. A genuine village band from the small Romanian town of Clejani, Taraf is made up of a dozen instrumentalists and singers ranging in age from 20 to 78. For the occasion of the concerts recorded for "Band of Gypsies," the band was joined by guest musicians from Bulgaria and Turkey as well as the Kocani Orkestar Brass Band from Macedonia. The band was discovered in 1990 by two Belgian music fans and signed to Crammed Disc in Europe. Their 1999 Nonesuch debut compiled the best of their three European releases and was followed by a multi-artist "gypsy caravan" tour of the U.S. A successful U.S. tour took place earlier this year, preparing audiences across the country for the release of "Band of Gypsies." The invigorating music of Taraf is a unique mix of local styles and flavors that represent the richness of the Romanian folk music tradition. Like Buena Vista Social Club, Taraf de Haidouks proves that these elder statesmen of music still have much to say. Romania's best-known music export, Taraf De Haidouks, returns with a live album that perfectly displays their ample talents. On tracks like "The Return of the Magic Horses," the playing is incendiary, accelerating almost to the speed of light, while the songs have their trademark, mournful gypsy quality. The album might share its title with a Jimi Hendrix record, but this is the real deal, bringing in enough guests from around the Balkan, including Macedonia's Kocani Orkestar Brass Band, to qualify as a joyous summit on modern Roma culture, and completely irresistible. Concert recordings aren't always successful, but this brings the atmosphere right into your living room--you can almost see the musicians smiling as they try to outpace each other, before launching into the kind of instrumental passage that seems beyond human ability--only to pull it off without breaking a sweat. Growing international success hasn't spoiled the band--they're still rooted in the village tradition. But when the fiddle bows scrape and the improvisations hit the stratosphere, the village becomes the world. --Chris Nickson Combined shipping discount on all items unless otherwise noted.
