PRESIDENT BENJAMIN HARRISON - MANUSCRIPT LETTER SIGNED 02/08/1887 - HFSID 14156 BENJAMIN HARRISON. Manuscript LS: "Benj. Harrison" as U.S. Senator, 1¼p, 7½x9¾ (front and verso). Washington, D.C., 1887 February 8. To James P. Foster, Tribune Building, 154 Nassau St., New York City. In full: "My present plan is to leave here sometime tomorrow for Providence with the view of attending a meeting of the Young Mens Republican Club of that City Thursday evening. I will return to New York Friday evening or Saturday morning and will stop at the Gilsey House with the view of attending the dinner of the Republican Club of New York City Saturday evening. You must not expect anything like a speech from me, but if I can add anything to the interest of the occasion by saying a few words I shall be glad to do so." Saturday, February 12th was Lincoln's Birthday and the Republican Club of New York City held their dinner that evening. After serving one six-year term, Benjamin Harrison left the U.S. Senate 23 days after writing this letter. Traveling around the country in 1887 and early 1888, visiting Republican clubs was part of his plan to win the 1888 Republican nomination for President. At the convention which opened in Chicago on June 19, 1888, Harrison was nominated for President on the eighth ballot and went on to be elected President on November 6th, defeating President Cleveland. He was the first man to defeat an incumbent President since his grandfather, William Henry Harrison, beat President Van Buren in 1840. While Harrison attended the February 12, 1887 New York dinner, former President Hayes did not. 3 file holes at left edge, minor paper loss at lower hole. Folds, vertical fold touches "j" in Benj. 1½-inch separation at mid-horizontal fold (all intact). Overall, fine condition.
