Description: The origin of the horseman and bull coins dates back to the eigth century. They were issued by the Shahi Kings of Kabul and Gandhara whose lineage can be traced to the Huns.The Huns came from the Mongol hoards of the Asian steppes that swept across Asia in the fourth century and posed a major threat to the power of the Roman Empire in Europe. The Afghan tribes used the distinctive Hun horseman design combined with the bull design found on Indian coinage. The horseman is thought to depict a Shahi ruler and the bull to represent the Indian god Siva, identified by his trident symbol on the rump of the bull. The horseman and bull design was imitated widely in India because of their popularity and wide acceptance. It was also used by the Turkish Ghaznavid rulers of Afghanistan when they established control over central Asia. The earliest coins of this style were struck in close to pure silver and were accepted as money for their precious metal value. However, once the design became popular, the silver content was gradually reduced. These lower silver content coins are sometimes referred to as "billion". Circa 900 AD
