Legend: Byzantine Costume: WITH THE DECLINE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE came the rise in importance of the Empire of the East, centred on Byzantium. Here tradition was all, and the only flexibility or variation in costume was in the dress of the Greek and Roman clergy and the Byzantine ascetics. Fig. 6 A Greek bishop of the ninth century, wearing a sticharium - a tunic that is crossed over right and left by two pieces of material called clavi that go down to the feet. He is also wearing a primitive form of chasuble - one, that is, without a V-neckline. His pallium has been decorated at the bottom with small pieces of lead to make it hang properly. 9, 10 & 11 Byzantine ascetics from the ninth century. The much-respected Greek ascetics wore the pallium, as a mark of respect for the ancient philosophers. Ascetics and ascetics alone were entitled to wear this cloak, and only priests who were judged to lead truly ascetic lives qualified for the privilege of the pallium. 12 Heldric, Abbot of Saint-Germain d'Auxerre, wearing a chasuble and an embroidered stole over his alb. 1, 2 & 3 Byzantine saints at the end of the 10th century, each wearing a pallium, a daimatic and an em- broidered tunic with leather shoes. The saint in 3 has a gold-coloured super-humeral - a piece of material that covers the shoulders - over his pauium. This traditional Byzantine decoration was worn by princes and lay dignitaries as well as by the higher clergy. 4, 5, 7 & 8 Officers of the Emperor, wearing cloaks decorated by a clavus of golden material. Fig. 13 & 19 A Roman abbot and bishop from the 10th century, the latter being, in fact, the evangelist Saint Mark in bishop's costume. With his pallium he is wearing a chasuble, a dalmatic and an alb. 16 & 18 Patriarchs from the same period as the bishop in 6, and with a similar costume to him. However, they are also wearing a epitrachelium - a stole made of a golden fabric. The priest in 16 wears a super-humeral of golden fabric, rather than a pallium. 17 A French bishop from the 11th century, with a conical tiara made from wicker, circled by gold or silver at its base and decorated at its point by a spherical jewel. He is wearing an alb, a dalmatic, a chasuble and a pallium, and a maniple is hanging from his left arm. 20 Nicephore Botaniate, Emperor of the East, crowned in 1078. 21 A patrician wearing a purple toga embroidered with gold over a dark tunic. Fig. 14 A Roman consul of the Lower- Empire in the fifth century. The development of this grandiose consular costume coincided with the decline of consular authority to a purely honorific status. The costume consists of a palmata - a toga embroidered with gold and decorated with a purple clavus - and a subarmalis proftindum or lorum. This was a wide band of material that was wrapped around the body. Eventually it became the sacerdotal pallium (see 16, 17, 18 & 19). Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy!
