Charlie and the Chocolate Factory FIRST U.S. EDITION, EARLY PRINTING Roald Dahl

Description: This is an EARLY, PRE-1973 PRINTING of the FIRST U.S. EDITION of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Although this is not a first printing of the first edition of this book (which was first published in 1964), it is an early U.S. printing which was published prior to the 1973 revised edition. It is illustrated by Joseph Schindelman. The book has cream paper boards with a brown cloth spine, green endpapers, publisher information on the last page set forth in four lines, a James and the Giant Peach review on the rear flap, and an ISBN # on the bottom of the rear dust jacket panel. Some online sources refer to this as the third printing of the first edition; others refer to it as the fourth printing of the first edition. In any event, it is an early printing (between 1970-1972) released prior to the 1973 Revised Edition, which made various changes to Dahl’s original text and Schindelman’s illustrations. We know the book was published in or after 1970 because the page listing Dahl’s works includes The Fantastic Mr. Fox, which was published in 1970. Similarly, we know the book was published in or before 1972 because: (1) the page listing the author’s works doesn’t list this book’s sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, which was released in 1972; and (2) it also doesn’t state “Revised Edition 1973” at the bottom of the copyright page or include any of Dahl’s 1973 revisions. The book is in very good to very good+ condition but for some light bumping to the spine ends and the edges of the boards and occasional very light smudges. Please see photographs as to condition. The dust jacket, which is NOT price clipped, also is in very good to very good+ condition but for some light soiling, rubbing, very faint toning, light chipping and very small tears. Please see photos as to condition. The colors on the jacket remain uncommonly bright and unfaded. The dust jacket is now protected by a removable archival mylar jacket cover. This collectible book is not price-clipped, not ex-library, not remaindered, and not a book club edition. It will be shipped bubble-wrapped in a box.
