Description: General John Rawlins was the Galena, Illinois Civil War staff officer who helped General US Grant maintain sobriety during most of the Civil War. An Original Civil War ink manuscript Special Order issued at HQ of the Department of the Tennessee at Young's Point, Louisiana, Feb 13, 1863, granting Captain Charles HG Knowles, 39th Ohio a leave to travel to a change of climate to prevent permanent disability. The 1p 8 x 11" ink order is signed by Rawlins as Assistant Adjutant General. The lower portion bears a red ink note addressing it to the "C.O. 39th Ohio Thru Maj Gen Hurlbut". Comes w bio info. General Rawlins had a short and difficult life. The child of an alcoholic he made it his mission to keep Grant away from alcohol. Sadly Rawlins died fairly young, of consumption, as did his wife. Minor Age stains, edge wear, Overall VG. Rawlins and Grant were at Young's Point in Feb 1863 managing the digging of the Young's Point Canal during the Vicksburg Campaign.
