Description: After more than 60 years of collecting coins it is time to move them along to new homes. Here is a nice example of a Roman Imperial bronze 18mm bronze follis issued under Constantine II who ruled from 316-340 AD. This coin was struck at Antioch between 317-320 AD. The son of Constantine I (the Great), he was a Caesar from 316-337 AD and Augustus from 337-340 AD. Interestingly, he was proclaimed Caesar by his father shortly after his birth and grew to be an accomplished military leader with victories over the Samaritans and the Goths. This coin is well centered and has fine details on both sides. The obverse features a detailed portrait of the laureate and mantled bust of the emperor left holding a globe, sceptre and mappa with a full crisp legend reading DN FL CL CONSTANTINVS NOB C. The reverse has a full palate and finely detailed classical design featuring Jupiter standing left with a chlamy across left shoulder, holding Victory on a globe and leaning on a sceptre, with a well detailed captive on the ground to left. A full crisp legend reads IOVI CONS-ERVATORI CAESS. The officina letter S with dot above shows in the right field. The Antioch mintmark “SMANT” shows clearly in the exergue below the design. This coin has toned evenly to a medium dark bronze patina and is shown in the RIC reference book under RIC VII 30s. I often receive questions as to which websites I use and recommend for research and while there are several good ones out there, I particularly like Wildwinds.com and numismatics.org and also forumancientcoins.com. I have often been asked what could these type coins buy in Roman days? At the time of this issue, one of these would buy enough bread for two days for a family or two liters of common wine so these type coins were used frequently for daily needs. As I bought most of my coins literally decades ago, I can offer them at the best available price you will find for the condition so my collection does not wind up in my “estate” sale! As everything needs to find a good home, I also provide FREE SHIPPING to within the US. **AS I AM FINALLY DISTRIBUTING MY COINS FROM OVER 60 YEARS OF COLLECTING YOU WILL FIND AFFORDABLE COINS OF INTEREST AT MY SITE FOR THOSE JUST GETTING INTO ANCIENT COINS AS WELL AS FOR THE ADVANCED COLLECTORS – ALL PROVIDED WITH CONTEXT IN HISTORY.
