Description: DESCRIPTION: Jagus Jaguar is a small, compact, crinum with bell-shaped flowers, a trait unique to all Jagus varieties. Another interesting feature of Jagus bulbs is that they have a strong vanilla scent. Unfortunately there are just four flowers, but they usually open all at once and make a beautiful show for about 2 days. Flowers are very large, around 5" in diameter with bright green throats. We grow about 11 different forms of Jagus and the flowers are very similar. They are all nice but each one has its own special charm. This is a more compact plant than most Jagus and would make a good pot plant. It is distinguished by its compact size. We have recorded blooms in May- July. We have observed as many as 4 flowers on scapes to 18" tall. Our largest bulbs have measured only 3" in diameter which is small for most crinum. It offsets moderately to rapidly in excellent growing conditions with a mature bulb producing several offsets each year. We grow over 1000 different crinum, including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: Jagus is a species but we don't know enough to distinguish a species from a hybrid. All but one of the varieties we grow are seed sterile (J. vanillodorum forms seeds for us), but the pollen is most likely viable to some degree on all of our plants (this is true of most crinum pollen). Just because the pollen is good on a crinum does not mean that it can fertilize any other seed fertile crinum. Because our Jagus don't form seeds we are inclined to believe they might be hybrids of some sort. We have no record where this plant was obtained. There is a hybrid named Jagus Christopher and this appears to be very similar. All of the Christopher bulbs we have ever seen or heard about, however, had discoloration in the pigmentation of the leaves, almost like a checkerboard pattern where some of the green was missing. This is usually a sign of a virus. The leaves on Jaguar are uniformly green. GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: Jagus bloom almost exclusively in May-July. They do fine with our mild freezes into the 20's here northeast Florida, zone 9, but we think they are more tender than most crinum and we recommend caution below zone 8, maybe keeping them as a pot plant and protecting them from freezing in the winter. Otherwise, Jagus are very hardy, prolific, can take lots of moisture, maybe even pond culture. They are an easy to grow bulb requiring no special care...just plant and forget, like most crinum. It tolerates a wide range of soils but prefers rich soil. Bulbs can survive nicely out of the ground for very long periods if allowed to dry. Like most crinum they prefer full sun, but partial shade is OK. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a medium-size bulb at least 2 years old and about 3/4-1 1/2" in diameter which should bloom within 2 years. They don't like being disturbed, so it could take one year to "settle in." Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive.
