Description: For sale is one of several wonder paintings that we are excited to be selling by the Evansville Indiana Outsider artist Reverend Joel D Hewlett (1921 -1994) These painting were exhibited in the Evansville Museum of Art from January thru April 2018 in an exhibition titled “EVERYTHING BEAUTIFUL IN ITS TIME: THE ART OF REVEREND JOEL HEWLETT," Hewlett was very religious and his paintings depict his deep faith often capturing images of Jesus, His disciples, Mary as well as family religious portraits. These newly discovered paintings by Reverend Joel Hewlett are new to the market for the first time. A true newly discovered Outsider Artist. The painting in this sale features what looks to be a depiction of a young woman in blue robe and red head shawl with a deer. Hewlett painted Mary this way at times and we suggest it may be his rendition of Mary. The woman looks off to the viewers right while the young deer gazes directly at the viewer. A very charming outsider art painting. It is signed by the artist in the lower right corner. Not dated but probably 1960’s in age. Condition: Age appropriate wear from being stored away. Hewlett worked at International Harvester and served as an associate pastor of Hood Temple AME Zion Church for 37 years. His religious carvings and paintings, depicting Jesus, biblical scenes and the lives of saints, reflect his deep Christian faith.
