Description: Excellent Early Native American Steatite Raven Holding Rattlesnake Bird Effigy Pipe, 5.5”. Recently acquired from the Outstanding Lifetime Artifacts Collection of Dr. Constantine Zariphes, Jr. of Rocky Hill, Connecticut.About 5.5” long, 1.5” wide and 3.375” tall, weighs a little over .5 lbs. One small flake along the side of his left foot and some along the top edge of the bowl (probably made during manufacture). The old label attached to the left side of the bowl identifies this pipe as from Ballard Co, KY. The auction catalog pictured showing provenance and this pipe’s photograph and listing (lot #343) is included.Dr. Zariphes, Jr. began collecting Native American artifacts as a boy of seven, eventually serving as President of the Connecticut Archaeological Society for four years and was lauded by this society for twenty-five years of dedicated service. He passed away this past August at the ripe age of 92, and this nice stone bird pipe was one of the items I won at the first of several auctions of this important collection.
