Printed by Charles Scribner's Sons in New York City in 1890, two volumes, measures 11.75 by 9.75 for each volume, original dark brown half morocco over vellum boards (with the title, flag of Emin Pasha, and Stanley’s signature on the boards and lettering on the spine stamped in gilt), top edges gilt, others uncut, 150 woodcut illustrations, 40 mounted plates on India paper, 6 signed etchings by G. Montbard, 3 folding maps (2 mounted on linen), 2 reproductions of pages from Stanley's notebook, a color geological diagram and folding table, and in very good condition with rubbing and staining to the boards, the vellum beginning to curve, and the limitation page, engraved frontispiece, and title page detached. DETAILS STANLEY’S TREACHEROUS EXPEDITION TO RESCUE THE OTTOMAN-GERMAN NATURALIST AND ONE-TIME GOVERNOR OF EQUATORIA, EMIN PASHA Stanley set out on an expedition to rescue the Ottoman-German naturalist and one-time governor of Equatoria, Emin Pasha, in January 1887. Following a particularly treacherous and difficult route which included a five-month journey through the Ituri rainforest and having lost two-thirds of the party, Stanley eventually convinced Emin Pasha to leave Equatoria in 1889. Four identical copies sold for $5,750 at PBA Galleries in September 2006, $5,625 at Heritage Auctions in September 2011, $7,500 at Christie’s in June 2012, and $6,250 at Sotheby’s in April 2017.
