Description: George Howell Gay – (American, 1858 – 1931) This watercolor on paper/panel by George Howell Gay of the New York coast measures 14-1/4” x 24-1/2” and is signed, dated and titled lower left George Howell Gay 1880 New York. As can be seen from the photo gallery, the original gesso frame has a lot of plaster loss but could be restored as it is pretty amazing in itself. The watercolor is in good overall condition, but does have a toning line, probably caused by the acidity in the wood backing panels, but it really doesn’t distract from the painting when viewing. George Howell Gay, best known for his watercolor’s, done in a Tonalist aesthetic that were normally characterized by warm hues of brown, soft greens and blues, gauzy yellows and muted grays, much like this New York coastal seascape of sailing ships, seagulls and the Atlantic Ocean on a cloudy New England day makes this a quintessential example of his work. Biography: George Howell Gay was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 2, 1858, and moved to Chicago, Illinois to study art at the Academy of Design. under Paul Brown and Henry Elkins. In 1889, Gay moved east and settled in Bronxville, New York. He is known to have exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1890; Boston Art Club, 1890-1900; and Boston Art Club, 1897. George Howell Gay died at the age of 72 on Friday May 8th, 1931. He was cremated and his funeral services were held in his home at 100 Kraft Ave., Bronxville, NY.
