Description: This is an antique mask recently purchased from a private collection. It is a ceremonial mask from Nigeria. The face features figure eight shaped eyes lined with orange paint with holes at the mouth, nose and eyes, facial scarification accented with orange paint and pursed lips. On the top of the mask is an elaborate top knot with a hole in the center. It has a raised cross on the forehead and there are two bird line and dot designs on the each side of the face. There are faint remnants of laundry or Rickett's blue on the top knot. The inside of the mask has also been stained orange. It measures 12 1/2" X 5 1/2". Condition: Good. Natural patina and signs of ceremonial usage. We purchased the collection of late 19th and early 20th century Nigerian artifacts collected between approx. 1950-70. There are over 50 pieces with a focus on ceremonial, ritual and spiritual tools and also a collection of West African currency manilla bracelets. Many are rare museum quality pieces including Ifa Divination tools, cowrie shrines and Santeria fetishes and Eshu figures. Be sure to check my listings for the other pieces from the same collection. All the pieces have been privately held for the last 60+ years by the original collectors and are offered here for sale for the first time. Provenance will be provided to the winning buyer if requested.
