Original Narrative: ISOLA LECCHI, LAGO DI GARDA: EARLY in the i sixteenth century a member of the ancient family of Lecchi founded a school for the study of theology, on this beautiful islet which now bears his name. The venerable 'founder' considered the retirement of the scene as happily suited to a study so solemn, and viewed the remoteness of the situation as a discouragement to insincerity, and a security against the intrusion of curiosity. So prevalent, however, was a fervid zeal for the .study of divinity.at.thatperiod.that in a few short years he found it necessary to enlarge his college, and erect an amphitheatre for the accommodation of the numbers that attended his lectures. The college, the lecture-hall, and the monastery, that once occupied this little " isle of saints," have passed away, and a delightful villa, which has risen from their ruins, is occupied by the Count Lecchi, the representative of an ancestral line, both long and unbroken. The beauty and solitude of the " Isola Lecchi" have thus been honoured by the notice of Dante :— " Luogo e nel mezzo la dove 'l Trentino Pastore e quel di Brescia e'l Veronese Segnar poria, se fesse quel cammino," and the graces of the Lago di Guarda, so long neglected, or postponed to those of the smiling, sunny Como, have at last found a full recognition, few parts of Italy being more admired by the picturesque, or the classic tourist. Near to Isola Lecchi is the isle of San Vigilio del Loga, less adorned with foliage, less varied in form, and inferior in extent, to the former, which is upwards of an English mile in circumference.
