"not the General" WAINWRIGHT - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 04/14/1921 - HFSID 24458 JONATHAN M. WAINWRIGHT. As Harding's Assistant Secretary of War to a woman planning to restore the village of Belleau, France, the site of "a glorious episode in our participation in the late war". TLS: "JM Wainwright" as Assistant Secretary of War, 1p, 7x9. Washington, D.C., 1921 April 14. On embossed letterhead of the U.S. War Office to Mrs. James Carroll Frazer, 1316 Sixteenth Street, Washington, D.C. In full: "I am much interested in your plan to restore the Village of Belleau, and wish you every success in an endeavor which will not only serve to recall a glorious episode in our participation in the late war, but also give practical evidence to the French people of our sympathy and deep interest in their terrible problem of the restoration of the devastated area of France". The Battle of Belleau Wood saw the re-capture by U.S. forces of the wood on the Metz-Paris road taken at the end of May by German 7th Army forces. The battle ran from June 6-26, 1918, and by its end saw U.S. forces suffer 9,777 casualties, of which 1,811 were fatal. The number of German casualties is not known, although some 1,600 troops were taken prisoner. The Belleau Wood action brought to an end the last major German offensive of the war which ended five months later. Wainwright (1864-1945) served in the 12th Infantry of the New York National Guard (1889-1903) and in the Spanish-American War as Captain of the 12th Regiment, New York Volunteers. A member of the N.Y. State Assembly (1902-1908) and State Senate (1909-1913), Wainwright was a member of the first New York State Workmen's Compensation Commission in 1914, serving until 1915. He was Lieutenant Colonel, Inspector General's department, New York National Guard, on the Mexican border in 1916. During World War I, Wainwright served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 27th Division, 1917-1919. He was Harding's Assistant Secretary of War from March 14, 1921, to March 4, 1923, when he resigned, having been elected as a Republican to the 68th and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1923-March 3, 1931). He did not seek reelection in 1930. Lightly soiled, stained and creased. Correction of word in text in Wainwright's hand. See more material from these signers: JONATHAN M.
