Description: La Journe de Mado (Mados Day) by Carlos Bady original pochoir-illustrated paper portfolio containing four loose leaves, as published by Galerie Lutetia, Paris in c1932. Delightful series of four pochoirs illustrating four scenes in the life of Mado, a beautiful young Parisian woman, with cherubs:- Mado babille Mado is talking on the telephone with one cherub listening to her conversation and anoher watching the scene; Mado se maquille - Mado is putting her make-up on with the assistance of the same two cherubs; Mado s'habille - Mado is getting dressed with the assistance of the same two cherubs; and Mado se dshabille - Mado is undressing but now with the assistance of two different cherubs. Pochoir is the French word for stencil. In the 1920s and 30s Art Deco era, the colour application process of the stencil was rejuvenated by the French. This interest in exploring the stencil process came in reaction to the proliferation of machine printing and the poor quality of colour reproductions in publishing. These illustrations were produced as some of the last pochoir pieces of the era during the harsh economic times that followed 1929 when many of the smaller couture houses had closed and several of the great illustrators had joined Vogue or Harpers Bazaar. published in Paris circa 1932 by Galerie Lutetia. Each piece measures (Paper) approximately 9 (24cm) by 7 (18cm); (Image) approximately 8 (20.5cm) by 6 (15.0 cm). Frame- height- 28.5 cm Width- 22.5cm Depth- 1.3cm The colors are among the most vibrant ever produced.
