Description: After more than 60 years of collecting coins it is time to move them along to new homes. I really like this coin due to its classic greenish bronze patina – a result of the copper content in this bronze. This is a well detailed 18mm bronze follis issued between 321-322 AD under Licinius II who was the son of Licinius, grandson of Constantius I, and half-nephew of Constantine. He was Caesar from 317 -324 AD while his father was Augustus. After his defeats by Constantine and Crispus at the Battle of the Hellespont and the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324 AD, Licinius I surrendered himself and his remaining forces to Constantine. After losing the civil war, his father lost power and both he and Licinius Junior were executed. Like his father, Licinius II was the subject of a posthumous damnatio memoriae and their names were expunged from official inscriptions, statues and coins. This has resulted in their coins being scarce and infrequently seen issues. This coin was well centered when struck at Antioch between 321-322 AD. The obverse has a nice bust left portrait of the helmeted, cuirassed emperor with a spear and shield with a full legend D N VAL LICIN LICINIVS NOB C. The reverse has a full palate of a classic design with fine detail showing Jupiter standing left, chlamys across left shoulder, holding Victory on globe and eagle-tipped sceptre, with an eagle with wreath at foot left, and a captive to right. There is an X over II Mu in the right field. The legend reads IOVI CONS-ERVATORI with the Antioch mintmark SMANTA showing clearly in the exergue below. This coin and type shows in reference book under RIC VII Antioch 36 A.
