Description: "The Life of George Washington; with Curious Anecdotes, Equally Honourable to Himself, and Exemplary to his Young Countrymen" by M.L. Weems, published 1820, 23rd edition. This book is probably best known as the source of the "Cherry Tree" anecdote (see photo of text where that story is told). Includes a bound in fold-out map and 7 woodcut illustrations, including frontispiece and portrait of Washington. The illustrations show: 1. Death of General Washington (frontispiece) 2. Portait of George Washington 3. Defeat of General Braddock 4. Battle of Lexington 5. Battle of Bunker Hill 6. Capture of Major Andre 7. Surrender of Lord Cornwallis. Bound in period full calf, 228 pp. Covers have scuffs and wear due to age. Gilt banded compartments on spine, spine lettering faded. The Washington portrait page has some paper loss. Pages have scattered foxing and creases. A scarce and collectible early printing of Weems' classic biography, with the rare map intact. Many copies currently available for sale are either missing the map entirely or there is only a fragment of it remaining.
