He began writing it at the age of 90 and it was left incomplete at the time of his death in 2012. It was painstakingly completed and orchestrated by David Murphy, a long-time collaborator of Shankar's, with the help of Shankar's wife Sukanya and daughter Anoushka. A musical love letter to by Shankar's wife, the opera is based on a tale from the Mahabharata. It seamlessly blends Western and Indian musical traditions to tell an epic and magical love story that spans time and space.
