Description: The Maiden Mask, "Agbogho Mmwo" is worn by young men from the third grade of the Mmwo secret society during festivals marking the beginning of the dry season. These masks incarnated benevolent female spirits returning to earth to assure their families safe arrival and happiness in the spirit world. The complex coiffure signifies a young woman's cultural attainments and social status. The Agbogho Mmuo is performed only by men wearing masks, the masquerades imitate the character of adolescent girls, exaggerating the girls' beauty and movement. This mask is 11" tall and includes the custom made stand. The mask is made of wood and has a band of decorative leather around it. There are holes around the top of the mask where there possible was raffia or hair. Provenance: I purchased this mask from Africa and Beyond in 1997Africa and Beyond's provenance is "Acquired in the 1950's by a Los Angeles Collector". I am downsizing and wish to find a good home for this mask I have loved for so long. It needs to be out where it can be seen and admired not stuck away in a box. I will be glad to try and answer any questions you may have about this mask.
