It will slide over to fit securely against the back of the amp. NOTE: I do not have a photo of the fan fully mounted. My jpeg file was lost and virtually all PL fans photos on the Internet of this Fans are my old photos. Anyone with a nice photo of these fans mounted fully on the 700unit would be greatly appreciated. That is how rare these are. I am running Dual 500’s these days so I cannot get the photo myself. ITEM DESCRIPTION: PHASE LINEAR FANS I had collected over time several extra 700, 400 and 500 series damaged and blemished original Phase Linear fans, spare parts as well as a collection out of an old stereo shop. I repaired and duplicated new fan shrouds by hand, and I sold refurbished Phase Linear fans that were hand built, but I was not satisfied by the way they were turning out. So, I stopped. You might be able to tell I am a little bit obsessive and perfectionistic (to your benefit). After a period of time, following many inquiries about the fans from other collectors, I thought it was time to get back to offering them again but doing them as close to the perfection as possible. This involved an investment of several thousands of dollars. Despite some decent sales and 100% satisfaction I have yet to break even. The 700, 400 and 500 series Phase Linear fans that I am offering today are completely brand new with the only original parts being the labels. The gauge of the metal of my fans, as well as the quality of fan motors themselves and the cord, are equal to the originals or superior in quality. All parts were laser cut to exacting measurements down to the last micron to perfectly match the original Phase Linear 700, 400, and 500 series fan shrouds. All assembly is done by hand as fans are ordered. Great care is taken to not blemish the semi-gloss black satin finish on both the outside and the inside of the surface of the fan shroud which is almost identical to the original finish. They come as a single unit ready to install, plug in and use. Make no mistake, these are very solid substantial units. Not excessively heavy but of a very fine quality. Please check my feedback which mirror my statements. The supply of these are limited and I will continue to sell them until they are gone and that will be the end of it. The condition of the fans is as good as you could ever possibly get. These were done right and are essentially defect free. If there are any marks, again they are from the production process. All finishes were done this time in power coated finishing. This finish is a very close match to the original finishes but far more durable. I do have a few extra original unrestored 700 fan side panels if someone is interested? They are simply left over from this process. I also have some extra Phase Linear decals available. Phase Linear Fan history and Motor Placement A little history about the fans. They were very rare. I know of only about a dozen that have ever popped up for sale outside of the ones I offer. I bought most of these back in the day. The 1970s "Boxer" brand fan was extremely quiet and came in from 22-24db range on testing. When bringing these back to the market I found the quietists 120 and 240 volt replacement motors on the planet. They are about 24db on professional mic testing. The original motors were in this range as well or slightly quieter. I find them quiet. If you have never had one on an amp you might notice a low level of operation but most do not. So far feedback has always been good. However, the level of noticeable air movement can vary. The way to get them super quiet is to use a small step-down transformer (or rheostat) to dial in the rotational speed of the motor units (SEE NARRATIVE AND PHOTO ABOVE). That or going with a 12-volt motor which would fit in the shroud but new word still need a step down voltage transformer. I have never had to do it but want to be clear on the units as stated in the ads. The700 fans fit ALL 700 series B amp, I & II amps. These are narrower than the 400 series fan due to the 400-fin separation being wider. The fan shroud assemblies for the 700 and 400 series simply slide snugly over the cooling fins at the back and 2 alligator clips then hold the shroud to the fins at the bottom. No modifications or work is required at all. The power chord then plugs into the back of the amp or the wall outlet if close by. The fans come with the standard 1-foot length chords. Longer chords are available if needed. Just request one at no extra cost. The D or Dual 500 fans require 2special high tolerance mounting brackets. If you are purchasing a 500 series fan there is an additional $15.00 cost for these brackets. These cooling fans really are a must if you use your amplifiers for any length of time at all. The heat buildup will trigger the amp to cut out despite the passive efforts of the cooling fins at the back of the units. These Fans have been promoted in the past as necessary to avoid burning out the main board on the amps and earned the Phase Linear amps the nickname of “Flame Engineering”. This is more myth than fact. However, many of the 700 amps I have run did kick off after about 45 minutes due to heat buildup. It is/was a common problem. I placed labels on both sides of the fan motor in case you wanted to unscrew and reverse the direction of the motor. Some prefer the pull thru of heat while others like the push thru. I think the resistance going against the amp may work harder than needed and cools less well but it will task either. As mentioned in the Ad, the rheostat shown in the photos is available to adjust the fan as variable speed. That can increase or decrease the rate of cooling or fan sound level to your specific needs. It is available from another vendor for $13 shipped. I cannot compete with that price. All fans are tested before going out. There is a one-year warranty. THERE ARE NO RETURNS EXCEPT FOR UNDER WARRANTY. So, buy well. Buyer’s remorse has little sympathy here especially if your children are buying when you are not around. My Phase Linear History Greetings Phase linear Fans. 15 years ago, at the time I was one of the largest collectors of Phase linear in the USA if not the World. I had been collecting Phase Linear since the 1980’s. The Gentlemen in Washington State who used to work at Phase Linear are the only ones I am aware of with larger collections. I believe they have sold most of these collections off. I still have 2 huge 800 square foot stereo vaults with storage racking to the ceiling full of Phase linear equipment. There is some infill of Pioneer and Carver for the units that Phase Linear simply did not offer as options. I also had more Phase Linear fans than I will ever use. I have collected my Phase Linear units from around the world. At one point I had gone through ~20%of the entire 1400 series II equalizers production in my search for the perfect units for my system. A full 50% of my collection is NOS and the rest is MINT originals. You should know the manufacturing process was a rough one on the units. Even NOS have no guarantee of perfection. Perfection came with going through untold numbers of units in service that were collected, and parts that were mint were interchanged out over time into one unit (or more). I have spoken to both the designers and builders of the units who were charitable with their time. They had shared the history, production, and design of these beautiful units with me. Fully half of ALL the NOS units I procured had blemishes on them. Even when the 4 pallets of NOS 3500 series II preamps were found I bought a dozen of those units to get the flawless ones I have now (combined with the additional collected out in-service unit mint parts). My 7000 series II tape deck alone took 20 units (including a NOS one) to get one with absolute MINT unblemished parts. What I have left is a large collection of very nice units across the board of Phase Linear to sell off. It is time to enjoy the decades of collecting and hard work. I know these Ads have been up for a while but my health has been compromised as I have gone through a series of surgeries to allow me to walk again.
