[1913] Edition: First edition Description: Hardcover. Oblong octavo (10 x 8"). Original cloth portfolio with gold and black lettering as well as pasted photographic reproduction of the "SS Imperator" to front cover. This splendid collection of photographs was produced to commemorate the completion of the new German ocean liner "Imperator." The SS Imperator was built for the Hamburg America Line (Hamburg Amerikanische Paketfahrt Aktien Gesellschaft, or HAPAG), launched in 1912. At the time of its completion in June 1913, it was the largest passenger ship in the world by gross tonnage, surpassing the new White Star giants, Olympic and Titanic.During World War I, the ship remained in port in Hamburg. After the war, it was briefly commissioned into the United States Navy as USS Imperator (ID-4080) and employed as a transport, returning America troops from Europe. Following its service with the U.S. Navy, Imperator was handed over to Britain's Cunard Line as part of war reparations where it sailed as the flagship RMS Berengaria for the final decade of its career. The ship was scrapped between 1939 and 1946.The 24 photographs are printed matte, and contain printed captions below, in German. 23 images are numbered, with the final image, showing a wide view of the exterior of the boat, being un-numbered. Each photograph measures 7 1/2 x 9 3/4". The images are comprised of exterior (6 images) and interior views of the ship (18 images), including the ballroom, the winter garden, the Ritz restaurant, the smoking room, the 1st Class dining room, the children room, the grand staircase, the swimming pool, the gym, and others. Also included is a portrait of the ship's Captain Ruser.[WITH]Includes three addition original glossy silver gelatin prints showing a general view of the ship (size 7 1/8 x 9 1/2); three tugboats alongside the "SS Imperator" (size 7 3/4 x 9 1/2", with stamp at verso: "For Duplicates of this negative order No. 4902 Brown & Dawson, Stamford, Conn.," and an interior view showing a passage to the life boats (7 3/4 x 9 7/8", also with a stamp at verso: "For Duplicates of this negative order No. 5099 Brown & Dawson, Stamford, Conn.").Minor shelf wear to portfolio.
