Description: ORIGINAL! RARE! CIVIL WAR PRESIDENT LINCOLN CABINET READING - L.C. HANDY / BRADY PHOTO c1866 THE 1ST READING OF THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION BEFORE THE CABINET - PHOTO Large Rare Brady / L.C.Handy Civil War / Lincoln Photograph. Most likely photographed by Mathew B. Brady (1823?-1896) between 1866-1870 and given to his nephew L.C.Handy for production / publishing along with thousands of other Brady Negatives. This photo, taken between 1866 and 1870 of the original 1864 painting by Francis B. Carpenter depicts a room with President Abraham Lincoln seated at a table with his cabinet members. President Lincoln is shown just left of center, legs crossed, holding papers on his lap, facing the viewer. Secretary of War Stanton (seated) and Secretary of the Treasury Chase are on the viewer's left of the President. Secretary of the Navy Welles and Secretary of State Seward are seated to the viewer's right of the President. Standing behind them are Secretary of the Interior Smith and Postmaster General Blair. Seated at the opposite end of the table from President Lincoln is Attorney General Bates. Various documents, books, and maps are scattered throughout the room on the floor as well as on the table. ( An example of this same photo without the photographers attribution is Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection of the Indiana State Museum.) Period Studio Stamp on the reverse by: L.C. HANDY - STUDIO 424 MD. AVE. S.W. WASHINGTON D.C. Levin C. Handy (1855?-1932) was apprenticed at the age of twelve to his uncle, famed Civil War photographer Mathew B. Brady (1823?-1896). Handy became an independent photographer and also inherited the negatives Brady had retained. Over the years, Handy owned studios in partnership with Samuel Chester and with Chester and Brady. The studio at 494 Maryland Avenue was the longest location. In the 1890s, Brady himself had worked and lived there, and Levin Handy resided there at his death in 1932. In 1954, Alice H. Cox and Mary H. Evans (Handy's daughters) sold approximately 10,000 original, duplicate, and copy glass negatives to the Library of Congress. Title : The First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation Before the Cabinet. Dimensions: 7 1/16" x 9 3/4" Postcard weight photo paper. Sepia with some silvering Condition is extremely fine with a very small minor damp stain and oxidation residue from a paper clip on the reverse (not affecting the image).
