Description: This reprint of Ben Jonson's English Grammar ("For the Benefit of All Strangers Out of His Observations of the English Language Now Spoken and in Use") originally published in 1640, was produced in 1928 by the Lanston Monotype Corporation. The purpose was to demonstrate the use of Monotype's Polyphilus and Blado Italic typefaces; at the back of the book there is a tip-in fold-out measuring approximately 320 x 195mm (12.5 x 7.8in) showing specimens of all available sizes of the two typefaces. As with all Monotype promotional material of this period, the emphasis was on creating an example of fine book-printing, since this was the market the company was developing. A Prefatory Note was written by Strickland Gibson (1877–1958) of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, who was Keeper of the Archives at the University of Oxford, and a lecturer in bibliography. Other than that the publication is a verbatim reprint of Jonson's 1640 edition. There are 93 printed pages, plus the fold-out, and the overall size is approximately 170 x 110mm (6.9 x 4.4in). This is a very attractive complete specimen of a rare and highly collectable publication.
