Description: Large, impressive watercolor painting of mountain laurel shrub and its delicate blossoms (the state flower of Connecticut, growing naturally in the wild, especially at the higher elevations in the state's far northwest corner, and blooming in the month of May), 19" by 28 1/2" (27 1/2" by 35 1/2" framed), signed at lower right and dated there 1890, by the well listed Massachusetts artist RICHARD ANDREW (1869-1956). Andrew was born in Belfast, (Northern) Ireland and died in Gloucester, Massachusetts. After receiving a fine art education in Paris with such luminaries as Gerome and Laurens, he returned to the United States, eventually becoming a department head at the Massachusetts School of Art in Boston. Andrew worked in easel painting, murals, and the graphic arts, and his body of work included a wide range of subject matter. Five of his murals today grace the Hall of Valor at the Massachusetts State House. His work was widely exhibited, at such venues as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Corcoran Gallery, Worcester Museum, Albright Art Gallery, Cincinnati Art Museum, and Boston Museum of Fine Arts. This watercolor is finely worked and the composition is beautifully composed. Allow for some reflections in the photos, which do not accurately depict the beauty of this watercolor. The colors are true and not faded; the old mat is tired and should be replaced (old waterstaining at lower corners).
