Description: Numerian | AE Antoninianus Reference: RIC V.2 416 Date: 283-284 CE Obverse: IMP NVMERIANVS AVG; bust, radiate, cuirassed, right Reverse: PIETAS AVGG: Mercury, standing left, holding purse in right hand and caduceus in left hand. KAΔ in exergue Mint: Rome Size: 20.6 mm Weight: 2.81 grams A decent starter antoninianus of the emperor Numerian. Comes with old dealer tag. Numerian's coins are relatively scarce compared to other emperors of the third century. This is in large part due to the brevity of his reign, being Caesar for less than a year (September 282- July 283 CE) and Augustus for less than one and a half years (July 283 - November 284 CE). He accompanied his father Carus on a victorious campaign against the Persians in 283 CE. However, Carus got struck by lightening in the aftermath of the victory and Numerian was forced to pull back to Roman territory. He was betrayed by his prefect Aper, and his putrefying body was discovered in the imperial coach before the army had returned to Rome in late 284 CE. ROUGH. A very affordable example.
