Description: This is a business memo from Frank Stevens (1851-19??), a real estate and insurance agent, located in Jersey City, New Jersey. Mr. Stevens was also a notary public and a commissioner of deeds. He was very successful in business, eventually becoming President of the Real Estate Trusts Co. Stevens was also a member of many New Jersey civic organizations; he was Treasurer of the Jersey City Board of Trade, President of the Paulus Hook Building and Loan Association, and was a member of the Board to Reappraise Railroads and Canals in New Jersey. The memorandum is written and signed by Frank Stevens on his business memo stationery. It is dated November 12, 1885. The stationery gives the location of his office (55 Montgomery St., Jersey City, New Jersey). The stationery also gives his telephone number; it is the shortest telephone number I have ever seen (see scan 1). The memo is addressed to Samuel Colgate (1822-1897), who was a prominent New York businessman and philanthropist. His father was William Colgate (1783-1857), the founder of what is now the Colgate-Palmolive Company. Colgate University is named in the family's honor. The memorandum is in good condition, with creases, some old handwritten notations, and moderate general wear. Shipping is FREE via USPS First Class Mail.
