SOL LEWITT early monoprint lithograph signed 1949

Description: Early monoprint lithograph by Sol LeWitt Signed by the artist1949 A unique print from when Lewitt was first experimenting with printmaking and lithography at Syracuse University. It was printed in 1949, the year that he graduated from the University with a BFA. Prints from this period in the artist's career are exceptionally rare--at most, a handful of impressions, but often only single examples are known. Several that are held in private collections were exhibited at the New Britain Museum's "Strict Beauty: Sol LeWitt Prints" in 2021 (not this one), and in these also the influence of Expressionism is strongly felt. The print is signed by LeWitt and dated 1949. It was purchased at auction from the original owner. On the back of the original frame, a note stated: “This monotype was given to my mother Saranne Werner Finder, as a graduation gift and a token of friendship by fellow art student Sol LeWitt at Syracuse University in 1949. Alan E. Finder, Saranne's son.” (See photo.) There is heavy matburn from the prior framing, which gives the portrait an amber cast that is not unpleasing, but the image is clean. I reframed the print in a solid frame of locally harvested black walnut wood, in acid-free matting, and behind UV-filtering glass to prevent further deterioration. Only serious offers, please.
