Description: This is a first edition, second printing (stated on copyright page and front flap) of the classic history of cryptography The Codebreakers, David Kahn, Macmillan / Wiedenfeld, 1967. OK, now for the question of an error. In the spirit of its subject matter, there appears to be a shadow over the specific publisher. As the photos show, this copy lists BOTH Macmillian, New York, AND Wiedenfeld and Nicholson, London as publishers. The spine of both the book and jacket list Macmillan, New York as publisher, and the price is given in US$. At the same time, the title page gives Wiedenfeld and Nicolson, London, as publisher while the copyright states printed in the US. All other US firsts I can find have Macmillan on the title page. A curiosity perhaps? Something more... sinister? As the cover description states, this was "the first comprehensive history of secret communication from ancient times to the threshold of out space." In fact, is was so accessible and detailed the US government intervened per-publication to remove some material as too sensitive. This, and it's updated edition, have been the go-to texts for historians, academics, and budding cryptologists for almost 60 years -- although the 1967 edition predates the release of information on the wartime Enigma breakthroughs. I don't think this copy was read, as the binding is so tight and I see no wear, and we have another (well read) copy. This is a HEAVY book, and we suggest media mail. We carefully pack our books, and ship in boxes.
