They knew now that “…if there is one thing one can always yearn for, and sometimes attain, it is human love.” - The Plague This charming book is in good condition for its age and is a 1966 edition. please refer to ‘photos :) Buying a vintage Penguin not only provides a very good read but also provides the reader with a wonderful book cover from the era it was published, and is a aesthetically pleasing addition to any bookshelf. Vintage Penguins are also a good investment as they very often not only retain their value but do tend to increase in value over time. Summary: The townspeople of Oran are in the grip of a deadly plague. Fear, isolation and claustrophobia follow as they are forced into quarantine. Each person approaches the lethal disease in their own way- some resign themselves to fate, some blame others and a few, like Dr Rieux, resist the terror. The central irony in The Plague lies in Camus' treatment of "freedom." The citizens of Oran become prisoners of the plague when their city falls under total quarantine, but it is questionable whether they were really "free" before the plague. An immediate triumph when it was published in 1947, The Plague is in part an allegory of France's suffering under the Nazi occupation, and a story of bravery and determination against the precariousness of human existence.
