Description: Two 10 1/4 in. white Mayer China divided "grill" plates with United States Army Medical Department caduceus. The caduceus, two snakes entwined on a staff topped off with a set of wings, is from the Greek root meaning “herald’s wand” and was a badge of diplomatic ambassadors associated with commerce, eloquence, alchemy, thievery, and lying. Take that in for a minute. A single snake entwined on a branch is the Rod of Asclepius, god of medicine, son of Apollo, god of healing. Veterinary medicine uses the Rod of Asclepius with V device as their symbol, not the two-snake caduceus. The “Mayer China” backstamp on the plates indicates a pre-1950, WWII era manufacturing date. The plates have no nicks, chips, cracks, or discoloration. A few light utensil marks may be visible when mirrored.
